Industrial Luxury on Facebook
Industrial Luxury's Facebook page needs some "fans."
Other than that, this FB badge thing is pretty cheesy. All I know is, Facebook is badly designed.

Apocalypse Culture

In reading Cormac McCarthy's story of post-nuclear survival in The Road, I am strongly identifying with McCarthy's vision of the American landscape in the aftermath of total destruction. The brutal environment he describes is probably more akin to what would actually be reality as opposed to Hollywood's depiction of human survival based on collecting provisions from abandoned supermarkets by day and then seeking refuge in predominately intact buildings by night. His seems to be the most accurate description of life in an era of total devastation and loss of hope.
I am also noticing more and more talk of survivalism and post-apocalyptic scenarios recently in the media and among my friends as well. I believe this has to do with the prospect of an Obama presidency and the failing global economy that leaves us with a notion of an approaching breakdown of our delicate, social contract. Which now, more than ever, seems to be almost inevitable.
In fact, there are more movies and more literature being produced that address the idea of a coming Apocalypse Culture. Fear perhaps? Watching a failed government flounder? A world of hatred and intolerance? Who cares; the reasons behind the "why" are unclear and, in the long run, don't matter. What interests me is that, for the first time since the Kennedy-era cold war, I feel the country is in grave danger of finally stepping over the line to oblivion.
As an aside, I would suggest reading this book before Hollywood manages to mangle it in one way or another… you can bet they couldn’t stay strictly true to McCarthy’s words because, well, telling a story of destruction and hopelessness would be, “kind of a downer.”
